NEW DELHI: Pakistan’s pace bowler, Shaheen Shah Afridi, stated that his primary focus is winning matches for Pakistan rather than aspiring for captaincy, during a media interaction in Karachi.
Afridi, appointed as Pakistan’s T20I captain after Babar Azam stepped down, emphasized that leadership roles are beyond his control and not his personal ambition.
“Pakistan is first and foremost for me, then it’s the team, and I come after that,” Afridi said. “I don’t like to think about the past. My job is to be in the present, and I don’t think about the future. If your present is good, you can be well-prepared for the future. Captaincy is not in my hands, and I have never played my cricket for captaincy. I want to play cricket for Pakistan and I will do that with dignity.”
Afridi had been given the role of T20I skipper following Pakistan’s exit at the group stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. He led the team in a five-match series against New Zealand, which Pakistan lost 1-4.
Despite the chance to showcase his leadership skills, Afridi’s time as T20I captain was short-lived as Babar Azam was reinstated as Pakistan’s white-ball captain ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Shaheen’s remarks underscore his dedication to his role as a player, with a focus on contributing to the team’s success rather than personal accolades. His main goal remains to help Pakistan achieve victories on the cricket field.
