In less than one week, the first BMX freestyle event of the Paris 2024 Olympics will get underway with the women’s and men’s park qualifications on Tuesday, July 30.
Events will continue with the women’s and men’s park finals the following day, July 31.
A total of 24 riders—12 men and 12 women—will compete in Paris in BMX freestyle. That’s up from 18 total athletes who competed in BMX freestyle’s debut at the Tokyo Olympics. Park is the only BMX freestyle discipline that has so far been included in the Olympics.
Half the Olympic BMX freestyle quotas were secured at the conclusion of the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) in late June, where six men and six women qualified directly based on their results during the qualification period.
The other 12 athletes qualified through their national federations’ quota rankings based on results throughout the qualification period, with France guaranteed one spot for each gender as the host nation.
The full men’s and women’s teams were announced in mid-July.
Many of the Tokyo medalists return to defend their hardware in Paris.
Defending gold medalists Charlotte Worthington of Great Britain and Logan Martin of Australia didn’t qualifiy for Paris by name through the OQS, but they were selected by their respective NOCs to fill their nations’ available quota places.
The United States’ Hannah Roberts, the silver medalist from Tokyo, is the top-ranked woman in the world heading into Paris. The other U.S. women’s team rider, Perris Benegas, finished just off the podium in Tokyo.
The top U.S. men’s qualifier, 22-year-old Marcus Christopher, didn’t compete in BMX freestyle’s Tokyo debut. His Paris 2024 teammate Justin Dowell placed eighth in the final.
Tokyo women’s bronze medalist Nikita Ducarroz of Switzerland also returns to Paris.
